Across the Disciplines: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Language, Learning and Academic Writing

Across the Disciplines is the result of a merger between two peer-reviewed, academic journals: Language and Learning Across the Disciplines and Academic.Writing. The mission of Academic.Writing, an online journal that was published from 2000 through 2003, was to provide information for - and an opportunity for interaction among - scholars interested in writing, speaking, and otherwise communicating across the curriculum (CAC). Language and Learning Across the Disciplines, a print journal published from 1994 to 2003, was a more traditional journal that focused on writing in the disciplines. In late 2002, when Academic.Writing shifted from being the "container" for the WAC Clearinghouse and became, instead, one of the publications available on the newer WAC Clearinghouse Web site, the scope of the journal shifted from a repository of all forms of information about communication across the curriculum to a more standard academic journal.
Like Language and Learning Across the Disciplines, Across the Disciplines provides CAC researchers, program designers, and teachers interested in using communication assignments and activities in their courses with a venue for scholarly debate about issues of disciplinarity and
writing across the curriculum. ATD also preserves the broader commitment to cross-disciplinary emphases in writing studies that characterized Academic.Writing. As was the case with Academic.Writing, ATD eschews the conventional volume/issue format of print and many online journals. Instead, ATD will continue to function as an evolving, growing document (or, more accurately, a collection of documents) on the Web. As such, articles and other materials will be published as they are accepted. At regular intervals, we will make announcements about new
materials in the journal.

Journal of Intercultural Communication

The goal of the Journal of Intercultural Communication is to promote research but also education and training in the area of intercultural communication. The journal is an outgrowth of the activities of NIC - the Nordic Network for Intercultural Communication. The great interest shown in the activities of NIC have pointed to a need for more journals employing a peer review procedure within the area of intercultural communication. By starting this journal, we hope to encourage more research and to facilitate contacts between interested researchers as well as to provide better possibilities for reviewed publication.
The world today is characterized by an ever growing number of contacts resulting in
communication between people with different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This
communication takes place because of contacts within the areas of business, military cooperation, science, education, massmedia, entertainment, tourism but also because of immigration brought about by labor shortage or political conflicts.
In all these contacts, there is communication which needs to be as constructive as possible,
without misunderstandings and breakdowns. It is our belief that research on the nature of linguistic and cultural similarities and differences here can play a positive and constructive role.

The Reading Matrix: An International Online Journal

The Reading Matrix: An International Online Journal is a peer-reviewed professional journal with an editorial board of scholars in the fields of second language acquisition and applied linguistics. The journal seeks to disseminate research to educators around the world. It is interested in exploring
issues related to L2 reading, L2 literacy in a broader sense, and other issues related to second language learning and teaching.
The Reading Matrix was created as an interactive journal, not an electronic version of a traditional print publication. The journal is published twice a year exclusively on the World Wide Web. Doing so allows us to reach a broad audience. It also provides a multimedia format more suited to some of our goals as we explore language as it taught and learned in both taditional and hypertextual environments, and it facilitates and encourages dialogue and communication from researchers and educators, offering an international perspective on the issues presented. As an online journal, we are committed to providing a forum for alternative modes of inquiry and viewpoints about the nature of literacy practices of diverse groups of persons around the globe.
